Teacher Student Loan Forgiveness

In the battle to destroy student loan debt, anything counts. Here’s how I got $5000 and how you may be able to get it all forgiven.

In 1999, when I went to university somewhere here in Southern California, I had no idea what kind of financial decision I was making. After a bachelors, a masters, and a doctoral degree, I’m holding my fair share of student debt. Here’s how you could get much of your debt forgiven.

I’m a classroom teacher hustling to pay off this student loan debt. I’m not an attorney, certified public accountant, or an official representative of anyone. However, here’s some things that I found out that allowed me to have $5000 of student loan debt paid off. Depending on your situation, you may be able to take advantage of some of this.

Student Loan Forgiveness Programs

Here are the student loan forgiveness programs I researched:

Teacher Loan Forgiveness

For certain types of student loans, you can have $5000 or $17500 (if you teach math or science at the secondary level) forgiven if you are (1) highly qualified, and (2) teach at an eligible school. There are a few requirements. This page walks you through all of them.

Teacher Loan Cancelation

For Federal Perkins loans, you may be able to qualify for loan cancelation or deferment. I wish I could have done this!

Did student loans impact your decision to become a teacher?
